'The best idea we ever had'

Post by webweaver » 21 Nov 2018, 17:22

"National parks are the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst." Apparently this was said or written by Wallace Stegner in 1983. It's been picked up as a slogan by the US National Parks (not surprisingly). Does anyone know where he actually said or wrote it? I am guessing it might be Conversations with Wallace Stegner on Western History and Literature (1983), so does anyone have this book?
Thanks
Catherine
