Re: Margaret Albright Knittl
I was the editor of Agricultural History Review at the time and handled this paper. Margaret Albright Knittl was certainly elderly - the age and generation of Joan Thirsk. I think that the research had been done long before. A quick Google search did not find a death notice for her, but I do see tha...

Re: Scottish farmers
There is quite a lot on the movement of farmers from Scotland to Essex before WWI, but in the interwar years, not that I'm aware of.

Re: Questionnaire on enclosure
Ah, I see what you mean. General point taken, but the few dated extracts from the returns which I have suggest that the questionnaire was circulated in December or early January. Anyhow, many thanks, but the initial question remains: anyone know where a copy of the questionnaire can be found.

Re: Questionnaire on enclosure
Dear Nutmeg,
Thanks for this, but I can't find the reference to which you allude. Could you give me chapter and verse please?
BW,
Richard

Questionnaire on enclosure
Can anyone point me towards a copy of a questionnaire circulated by the Board of Agriculture in either December 1800 or January 1801 to the ministers of parishes enclosed since 1760, asking about the experience of their parishes since enclosure? I know it existed but cannot trace a copy. It is just ...

Re: The land Utlisation Survey of Britain, ed L. Dudley Stamp
Thanks for getting in touch. Yes, we did resolve the question thanks ... we were put in contact with Audrey Clark's son, Giles Clark, and he both gave his consent to us scanning and posting them and gave us Stamp's own set from which to work. If you don't know LIBRAL, the Welsh Counties were added e...

Silly me, or the Great Betrayal
I am revising some typescript and have a missing reference where I make a comment on the collapse in agricultural labourers' wages after the 'Great Betrayal' (1921) when farmers answered the removal of subsidies by cutting their costs. I have a note that it comes from a writer who has not, so far as...

Re: MAFF leaflet from late 60s/early 70s
I think that MAFF publications are a complete bibiographical mess. I have never seen anything that looked like a complete set. The intention is to put all the Bulletins on LIBRAL in at least one edition and as much of the one-off literature as we can access. It may be worth you looking over the Sect...

Re: Annan plough
The results of a quick newspaper search.
The Chester Chronicle on 29 Sept. 1843 reported that the annual meeting of Denbighshire and Flintshire Agricultural Society had been shown an Annan Plough. This suggests novelty, but it also appears to be the only reference in the newspapers in 1840-1844!

The Diary World and British Dairy Farmer
LIBRAL would like to enlarge the run of its volumes of Dairy World. The BL holdings run from 1898 through to 1939: one assumes that that is the total period the journal published. MERL at Reading has a set from 1912 to 1939. Can anyone point us to a run which we can borrow to scan? If any survive, t...
