Re: Meat consumption end 18th century
It is a very intractable problem as there is no international trade in cattle and so no customs figures. No one attempted to measure the size of the internal domestic market. The most recent discussion will in Steve Broadberry et al, British Economic Growth (2015) although this may well not be fine-...

Re: Single Trees in Cultivated Fields
I think that there are two possible reasons. The first is that these are tree which stood in parkland. You don't say what the current land use is, but it is not uncommon to see standard trees in arable fields. The alternative, as you suggest, is that they mark the lines of hedges which have been rem...

Re: Low grain prices and growth of brewing and distilling
Dear Professor Stampfer, Webweaver has pointed out to me that no one has answered your query, which is a good one, and so like a fool I will plunge in. I am a little handicapped in that I am on holiday and so have no access to my books, so I could perhaps add more to this when I get home. I fear tha...

I think that the interest in pests might reflect George Ordish, who was long gone before I was involved in the Society but I think I am right in saying was in the pest control business - perhaps totally misrecollected, but fruit tree sprays comes to mind. Ted Collins may well know.

Re: Co-operative involvement in British meat processing
I am afraid that I am not sure that the book you are hoping for exists. The whole area is, to the best of my knowledge, unexplored, so it is into the grey literature. You might find something of use in a report of 1964: Committee of inquiry into fatstock and carcase meat marketing and distribution c...

Leave open the possibility that it derives from a surname.

Re: Edward VII, Pheasants and a despairing farmer
At last! An easy question on the forum! The lady in question is Louisa/Louise Cresswell who published an autobiography (which it is claimed the estate tried to buy all of the copies of). She published as Mrs Gerard Cresswell, Eighteen years on the Sandringham estate (1887). The most recent account i...

Re: Agriculture in Surrey at the turn of the nineteenth century
To add to Alan’s suggestion: You also want to see the second General View of Surrey by Stevenson. Unfortunately we don’t have this on LIBRAL, nor do we have a copy to scan. Can anyone help by lending us one? Otherwise you may well find it on Google books or Archive.org. I have two other suggestions....

Re: Pilgrim Fathers - Seeds
I am not sure that I can really advise on this in the depth that you wish. The question seems to break down into several parts. i. I think that the food on board would have been pretty thin stuff: bread, biscuit, cheese, weevils. I would doubt if there was anything on board to be eaten that was fres...
