I was reading Eric Jones' article 'The Bird Pests of British Agriculture...' from AgHR 20.ii (1972), and was intrigued to read that it was first presented at 'the B.A.H.S. Conference on Agriculture and the History of the Environment in November 1970'.
Do any forum members have a copy of the programme? I can't find a write up of the event in a subsequent issue of the AgHR.
I would be interested to know what was spoken about, as the event sounds a lot like an environmental history conference at what would have been a relatively early point in the development of the sub-discipline in the UK (under the name environment/environmental at any rate).
With thanks in advance, John

Hi John
It is interesting to get questions about the historiography of the Society itself! In the early days of the Review, conference reports were fitted in on odd half-pages at the ends of articles, as 'Notes and Comments'. The Winter Conference report you are looking for is on page 64 of volume 19 part 1 https://www.bahs.org.uk/AGHR/VOLUMES/AGHR19.pdf. Several of the speakers are, to our knowledge, still with us.

Re: BAHS winter conference 1970
Thank you very much, Catherine! It's interesting that there was such a concentration of interest on pests ('environment' positioned as something that intrudes on agriculture, and vice versa?).
The programme that day was:
Agriculture and the History of the Environment
Department of Geography, University College London, Saturday 28 November 1970
M.D. Hooper and J. Sheail, 'Agricultural Change and its Impact on Wild Life'
Hugh Prince, 'Antiquarianism in the English Landscape'
E.L. Jones, 'Agriculture's Reduction and Renewal of Bird Pest Problems in recent Centuries' (read by E.J. Collins)
George Ordish, 'The Ecological Implications of Pest Control: a Historical Survey'
...and it was 'extremely well attended'.
I suppose this is as good a place as any to plug the forthcoming winter conference, which forum readers can read about on the homepage.

Re: BAHS winter conference 1970
I think that the interest in pests might reflect George Ordish, who was long gone before I was involved in the Society but I think I am right in saying was in the pest control business - perhaps totally misrecollected, but fruit tree sprays comes to mind. Ted Collins may well know.
