Police as Ploughmen March/April 1917

Post by Mary Fraser »

I have found through a police journal that ~500 policemen were released urgently to help farmers to plough and plant in Spring 1917, as a government initiative to increase home food production to try to prevent population starvation. While the police journal, the British Newspaper archive, local government minutes and local War Agricultural Committees confirm this, I have drawn a blank as to the farms that these policemen went to. Do you know if there are likely to be any farming records that will give this information? The areas that released the most policemen were Birmingham (89) and Glasgow (90), but I would like to search as many as possible.
Any information would be most welcome.
Thanks
