goat crook

Post by oldandpeculiar »

recently at East Riddlestone Hall in Yorkshire I saw an item which the National Trust have marked as a 'goat crook'. it has 2 opposing crook like hooks (i.e. like a crook back to back) and in the middle a diamond shape that takes up most of the space between the hooks to about the same height. the crook ends have ornate points and there is some other decoration to the shaft before the wood pole handle. to me it looks more like a processional item, maybe religious, rather than a farming one.
does anyone have any thoughts on this? sorry I can't attach a photo, the site says the file is too big to post although only one photo.
