Dublin Cattle Market

Post by Declan O'Brien »

My name is Declan O'Brien. I am currently researching history of the Dublin Cattle Market and was wondering if anyone had contact details for families or individuals based in Britain who may have bought cattle or sheep in the Dublin Market or whose fathers or grandfathers might have purchased livestock there.
Around 4,000 cattle and 6,000 sheep were sold in the Dublin Market each week between the 1860s and 1960s. The vast majority were exported to Britain and a cohort of British buyers visited Dublin each week to purchase the stock. The cattle bought in Dublin went straight onto farms in Britain or were sold on in markets such as York, Banbury or Rugby.
It would be excellent if I could contact some British buyers who frequented the Dublin Market as it would provide a fuller picture of the sale and the trade that underpinned it.
Kind regards,
Declan O'Brien.
