Model Farms

Post by RichardHollingum »

I am a trustee of a charity based in Northamptonshire that own a site that contains an 18th century model farm (http://northantsacre.org.uk/heritage-an ... rm-complex). Many of the buildings are in a sad state of disrepair and we are working towards a project proposal for the whole site which includes the successful conservation of these buildings.

We are looking for information about model farms of this period, advice about the historical use of the buildings and some indication of the sort of importance that this has. Any leads will be gratefully received.

I would start with P. S. Barnwell and Colum Giles, English Farmsteads 1750-1914 (1997) and then S. Wade Martins, Farmers, landlords and landscapes: rural Britain, 1720-1870 (2004). There are chapters on farm buildings in the Agrarian History of England and Wales.
