Shire Horse stud farms
Is anyone aware of any surviving examples of purpose-built, single-phase farm complexes for the breeding of Shire Horses (or any other heavy horse breed) in the UK please?
Re: Shire Horse stud farms
I have a reply from Yvonne Hatch, who says she is 'not sure if “purpose-built, single-phase farm complexes for the breeding of Shire Horses….etc….” means a dedicated heavy horse breeding stud on farm land. Most of the major heavy horse studs in the UK were based on the great estates, and I would believe not. Would suggest the book, The Shire Horse: A History of the Breed, the Society and the Men, by Keith Chivers, originally published in 1978, reprinted in 1999. This is the “Bible” for heavy horse history and although dedicated obviously to the Shire, has meticulous research on the other heavy breeds, especially the Clydesdale, and the Suffolk.'

Hi, thank you.
Yes, dedicated use and constructed for such.
I am very familiar with Chivers' work.
