The Politics of the English Grain Trade Project is hosting a two-day conference, 9-10 June 2025, at All Souls College, Oxford, on the comparative history of the grain trade. The conference will consider differences and similarities in (aspects of) the grain trade in a wide context of political and social relations, economic development, geographies, and cultural characteristics.
The organisers invite proposals for 20-minute papers related to the comparative history of the grain trade across the period 1500-1800, broadly relating to the following themes:
- The structure of the international grain trade
- Mills and the milling industry
- The cultural meanings of bread and grain
- Political economy and market regulation
- Conflict, litigation, and popular politics of grain
- Production and environmental change
Proposals, consisting of a title and abstract (c.200 words), should be sent to politicsofgrain@gmail.com by Friday 31 January 2025.
The conference is supported by the AHRC and All Souls College, and funds will be available to assist with travel and accommodation costs.
